Title: Of Pots and Pleasures: Beauty and Taste in the Hippias Major

Abstract: The concept of the kalon (beautiful, noble, admirable) often distinguishes ‘honourable’ as opposed to ‘shameful’ pleasures in aesthetic terms, as beautiful as opposed to ugly. How are these distinctions drawn? The Hippias Major contains an implicit and compelling answer: social practices shape how beauty is conceived and perceived in classical Greek ethics. I show how contests over which sensory pleasures and material objects, especially taste and cookery, are kalon involve class-based ‘pursuits and customs’ from which one learns what it means to live well - not unlike Taste in the 18th-century.

Pizza and drinks will be served.  We hope to see many of you there!

Best,
