Professor Matthews, who received his D.Phil from Oxford University in 1969, has published many books, including Western Aristocracies and Imperial Court, A.D. 364-425 (1975), Political Life and Culture in Late Roman Society (1985), and Laying Down the Law: A Study of the Theodoosian Code (2000); his Atlas of the Roman World (1982), co-authored with Tim Cornell, has been translated into nine languages.
His courses include seminars in the social, political, and cultural history of the later Roman west and in Roman historiography.
