Among its many activities, Yale Classics sponsors a number of community-generated workshop series designed to address emerging interests and salient concerns and to assist students and faculty in the development of their careers.
American Classicisms
Founded in 2019, the American Classicisms working group hosts a range of events each year which broadly explore the reception of premodern cultures in the Americas. With the generous support of the Whitney Humanities Center and the Yale Department of Classics, the group has organized discussion groups, workshops, lectures, and field trips for members of the Yale community and non-Yale scholars interested in the working group’s aims.

Classics Anti-Racism Reading Group
This reading group meets roughly once a month to read and discuss materials related to racism and Classics.
If you have any questions, or are interested in proposing a topic or leading a session (we are open to anything, whether you’d like to lead an informal discussion, workshop a paper or syllabus, formally present relevant work, etc.), please reach out to the organizers Ryo Nagao and Zhenghe Ma.
Archaia Forum
The Archaia Forum is an interdisciplinary working group for graduate students who work on the ancient and premodern world (broadly conceived). We welcome students of any historical period in any geographical region to join us in discussion of what it means to study the past. We meet approximately once a month for events of various types, including roundtable discussions, professional development, and student presentations. The Forum is intended as a venue for those involved in the the Archaia Qualification to workshop their capstone projects. Our overarching goal is to provide an open and collegial space to build community, receive feedback on research, and engage deeply with interdisciplinary themes and methodologies. We will issue a call for presentation proposals at the beginning of each semester, but we also welcome proposals and suggestions for other events on an ongoing basis.
Greco-Roman Lunch (GRL)
GRL is a platform for anyone at Yale working on ancient Mediterranean-related projects to present their work to a cross-departmental audience, including (but not limited to) those studying Classical Archaeology, Classics, History, History of Art, Jewish Studies, Medieval Studies, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, Religious Studies, and Digital Humanities. GRL provides an opportunity to get feedback and rehearse conference papers in a friendly environment. Lunch is provided, courtesy of the Classics Department, for those who sign up to attend in advance.

Classics Work-in-Progress Workshop
The Yale Classics Works-in-Progress (WiP) series is a forum for those working on classics-related research—conference papers, dissertation chapters, articles, etc.—to share and receive friendly and productive feedback. Presentations typically last 30 minutes and are followed by informal questions and discussion, accompanied by refreshments. The WiP typically meets on Mondays at 4:00 pm.
Presentations are supplemented in the spring by professional development topics and some external speakers.
