It’s our delight to announce a special meeting of the Anti-Racism Reading Group on Fri February 21st at 12 noon in PH 401!
We will be discussing Critical Ancient World Studies: The Case for Forgetting Classics which elucidates a new model for studying the ancient world, one which questions the structures shaping the production of knowledge about antiquity. CAWS is explicitly set against Eurocentrism, Western teleology, and positivist accounts of history; it requires “a commitment to decolonising the gaze of and at antiquity”, as well as practical commitments to seeking out inequality and decentering the study of Greece and Rome. This thought-provoking collection of essays was published just last year by Routledge, edited by Mathura Umachandran and Marchella Ward.
For our meeting, we will be looking at the introductory manifesto and one other chapter (TBD).
Furthermore, we are excited and privileged to announce that one of the editors, Chella Ward, will be joining us for our discussion via zoom!
In-person attendees will be provided with lunch (for which, please sign up here: Link to Google Form Here) and a zoom link will be circulated closer to the time for anyone wishing to join remotely.
