Founded in 2019, the American Classicisms working group hosts a range of events each year which broadly explore the reception of premodern cultures in the Americas. With the generous support of the Whitney Humanities Center and the Yale Department of Classics, the group has organized discussion groups, workshops, lectures, and field trips for members of the Yale community and non-Yale scholars interested in the working group’s aims.
To join the American Classicisms mailing list and receive updates about upcoming events, please email working group co-organizers Catherine Saterson (catherine.saterson@yale.edu) and Kirsten Traudt (kirsten.traudt@yale.edu).

This semester, the American Classicisms working group will hold two events.
The first, held in conjunction with Professor Erika Valdivieso’s seminar “Didactic in the Atlantic World,” will be a talk by Katie Dennis (University of Wisconsin-Madison) on her work on the Maryland Eclogues, a series of poems from the colonial Chesapeake, and their reception of Virgil. This event will take place on Monday, February 17, from 3:30 to 5:20 pm in WLH 204.
The second will be a session at Beinecke Library led by curator Julia Hernández on modern reworkings of ancient Greek drama. These will include papers pertaining to H.D.’s adaptation of Euripides’ Ion and archival materials from the original production of Steven Sondheim and Burt Shevelove’s adaptation of The Frogs. This event will take place on Thursday, April 17, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at the Beinecke.
Please fill out this form to RSVP to either event or both.
