Congratulations to Daphne Martin (Yale Classics 2019), for this recent high-profile coverage of the initiative “Embracing Our Monuments in Sparta”, which Daphne founded in collaboration with other students at Yale. The following article was published in the Greek newspaper I Kathimerini on November 1st. In the context of a discussion of Greece’s poor record in attracting foreign students to its universities and educational programs, the author devotes several paragraphs to “Embracing Our Monuments in Sparta”, as an example of the educational role that imaginative cultural heritage projects can play in fostering new educational opportunities for overseas students in Greece. The caption under the first photo translates as “The Yale University students aim to foster appreciation for Sparta’s monuments among residents and visitors”. Daphne is currently enrolled in the M.Phil. in Classical Archaeology at Cambridge University, funded by a Paul Mellon fellowship.
