Anti-Racism Reading Group

Event time:
Monday, December 5, 2022 - 2:30pm
Event description:
On Monday, December 5th at 2:30pm, we will meet to discuss anti-racist pedagogy in Classics, with future outreach in New Haven in mind. We will also talk about plans for next semester. The meeting will take place in Phelps 407, and snacks will be provided.

The readings we will discuss are Tom Di Guilio’s “Five Tips for Teaching Racial Competency,” Joanna Paul’s “The Democratic Turn in (and through) Pedagogy” (attached), and the Cambridge Latin Course’s Stage Six and resources on Roman Slavery (some of which can be found online; we will circulate a scan of other relevant material closer to the date).

We also wanted to circulate the SCS’s list of anti-racist resources on pedagogy.

We’ve tried to keep the readings brief, but we realize that this is a busy time of the year. We encourage you to come even if you don’t have time to complete all of the readings.
