Event description:
We hope you have all had good summers and are ready for more discussion of readings and issues related to anti-racism, a mode of thinking that aims to be not just not racist, but actively anti-racist. This semester we’re planning a couple of sessions to look at some iconic texts from the investigation of race in the ancient world.

Our first session will be Thursday Oct 5th at 4pm in Phelps 401, and we’ll be reading the Introduction to Benjamin Isaac’s The Invention of Racism in Classical Antiquity, along with a contemporary review of this now famous volume. As always, the reading is casual - if you don’t get to it, no stress, our discussion will centre on race in the ancient world using Isaac’s work as a catalyst and your participation will be valued regardless! As always, there will be snacks and drink provided.

The ARRG is also looking for some new committee members! We usually operate with a small team of undergraduate members, and a graduate member. Two of our undergraduate members from last year have happily graduated and moved on to new and exciting things, so we’d like to recruit at least one, ideally two new undergraduate members. This is a great opportunity for demonstrating organisational skills for your CVs, and we hope a rewarding chance to direct conversations within the Classics department, helping to shape the development of our culture as a community. We need new perspectives and fresh ideas to keep Classics up to date! The commitment is relatively light, particularly if we have several people joining us. Please email jasmine.sahu-hough@yale.edu, or jackie.testamark@yale.edu to express interest and/or to obtain further information about the ARRG committee.
