A Yale Tradition
The Department of Classics is among the oldest at Yale University. Over the centuries, Yale Classics has opened the treasure house of the ancient world—with riches from Greek and Latin literature, ancient philosophy and history, classical art and archaeology—to the thousands who have studied with us. We have also produced some of the most outstanding research into the problems of antiquity, from archaic and classical Greece to late ancient Rome. Our alumni populate the finest institutions in the United States and across the globe, from academia to business, law, medicine, education, and beyond. We are proud of you and of the tradition of excellence we collectively uphold.

Capital Gifts
Endowment
What sets Yale Classics apart is our ability to provide students with grounding in the traditions of the ancient world in ways that prepare them to face the challenges of the future. Endowed capital gifts make this possible. They provide a permanent, secure annual income stream for designated programs. These gifts are invested by the university, and the income from the gifts is directed toward an enduring purpose by the donor. Only the income from the principal is expended, so the gift continues in perpetuity. Many people choose to make this generous gift to create a legacy in honor of a loved one.
We are happy to help you create a gift that aligns with your philanthropic interests. Some popular choices include:
- Facilities
- Graduate student fellowships and scholarships
- Postdoctoral fellowships
- Professorships
- Targeted research projects
Spendable Gifts
These gifts are dollars that are not invested in the University endowment and are available for the department chair to spend as needed. Funds here allow the chair to be nimble and direct dollars each year where they are needed the most. Gifts under $25,000 are welcome to the Chair’s Spendable Fund noted below.
Annual Giving
Donations to the Graduate School annual fund are used right away to support students, faculty, and programs. Support of student financial aid ensures graduate students receive an education uninhibited by economic factors, thereby attracting a more diverse student body.
Whether you are alumni giving $25 or $50,000, your Annual Giving gift to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences makes a huge difference.
Matching Gifts
If you work for a company that will match your gift, you can double the impact of your philanthropy. Check the database to see if your company matches employee charitable contributions.
Planned Gifts & Bequests
You may be able to make a larger donation than you thought possible, all while enjoying significant tax benefits, providing for your heirs, and creating your legacy at Yale.
